2024/25 Brazil Soybeans 2% Planted vs. 5.2% Last Year

Brazilian soybeans were 2.0% planted as of late last week compared to 5.2% last year and 2.7% average according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 1.1% for the week. Nearly all the planting last week occurred in southern Brazil especially the state of Parana. Only an occasional field of soybeans have been planted in Mato Grosso.

A few light and scattered showers occurred over the weekend in northern Mato Grosso, central Goias, and west-central Minas Gerais. Rina this week will favor southern Brazil especially Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Light and scattered showers are possible this week in Mato Grosso.

Soybean planting in Brazil is getting off to a somewhat slow and uneven start. Planting is ahead of average in Parana, but behind average in Mato Grosso and central Brazil. I am not too worried about soybeans at this point. If the rainfall picks up in central Brazil over the next 1-2 weeks, the soybean yield potential could still be achieved. If it remains dry in central Brazil until October 15-20, then I would start to get concerned about the safrinha corn and the soybeans.

Parana - Safras & Mercado reported that 13% of the soybeans had been planted by late last week compared to 18% last year and 8.8% average. The Department of Rural Economics (Deral) reported late last week that 10% of the soybeans in the state have been planted. The planting conditions for this week look favorable and farmers will continue to plant their soybeans. Parana will have the earliest planted soybeans in Brazil this year and probably the earliest planted safrinha corn as well which is important because Parana is the second largest safrinha corn producing state in Brazil after Mato Grosso.

Mato Grosso - The soybeans in Mato Grosso were 0.5% planted as of late last week compared to 4.1% last year and 2.8% average according to the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea). This represents an advance of only 0.2% for the week. Below is the soybean harvest progress in Mato Grosso (red line) for September 27, 2024.

Mato Grosso do Sul - Farmers in Mato Grosso do Sul had planted 1% of their soybeans as of late last week compared to 2% last year and 2.4% average. All the planting has been in the southern half of the state where they have received rain.
