Corn - The condition of the 2024 U.S. corn crop declined 1% to 64% rated good/excellent. Twelve states indicated that the corn condition improved last week, 3 states indicated that the corn condition declined last week, and 3 was unchanged. Most of the improvements were found across the Midwest while most of the declines were found in the northern areas. The top five rated corn states are: Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The five lowest rated corn states are: North Carolina, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, and Tennessee.

The corn is 29% mature, which is equal to last year and five points ahead of average. The corn development is furthest behind in South Dakota with 10% mature vs. 17% average and Minnesota with 12% mature vs. 18% average.

Soybeans - The condition of the 2024 U.S. soybean crop was unchanged at 65% rated good/excellent. Eight states indicated that the soybean condition improved last week and 10 states indicated that the soybean condition declined last week. Most of the improvements were found in the central and southern areas while most of the declines were found in the northern and western areas. The top five rated soybean states are: Iowa, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. The five lowest rated soybean states are: Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kansas, and Michigan.

The soybeans are 25% dropping leaves which is two points behind last year and four points ahead of average. The current dry weather is expected to accelerate the soybean maturation.

Soil Moisture - The nation's topsoil moisture declined last week with 5 states indicating improved soil moisture and 13 states indicating lower soil moisture. The improvements were found in the southern areas while the declines were found across the Midwest. The five states with the highest soil moisture are: Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Louisiana, and North Carolina. The five states with the lowest soil moisture are: Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Arkansas.

The soil moisture has declined eight of the last nine weeks and it is now slightly below the long-term average and it will decline again next week. It is turning out to be a dry end to the 2024 U.S. growing season, which could end up trimming the yields.
